Double glazing is something all homes in the UK should be fitted with, to ensure homeowners aren’t wasting money on bills. Double glazing is environmentally friendly as it reduces the amount of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere, and therefore helps prevent global warming. But how does this work?

A double glazed unit is made up of two panes of glass, separated by an air gap. The air gap can be anything between 8mm and 28mm in thickness and is usually filled with an inert gas, such as Argon, Xenon or Krypton.

This unit is very energy efficient as it stops heat escaping through the window, which is where 18% of a home’s warmth is lost. If the unit is sealed inside an uPVC frame, it’s even more energy efficient too. Although you will find frames of other materials as well, with wooden and aluminium frames being equally popular. Deciding on the frame all depends on what look will suit your property.

After the initial installation a certain amount of gas will leak from the unit every year, but the windows will remain efficient for at least 15 years. This means you have 15 years of reduced bills, as you won’t need to have your heating at a higher temperature to warm your home. Every year you could save hundreds of pounds with double glazed windows.

Not only that, but your carbon footprint will be reduced too. As your home burns less fuel for heat, the amount of carbon produced is lowered. Carbon is one of the causes of global warming, so reducing the amount released makes double glazing environmentally friendly.
And there are many more benefits too. As the two panes of glass can’t ‘feel’ each other’s temperatures, moisture won’t settle on the warm inner pane. This will dramatically reduce the condensation on your windows.

With double glazing you’ll also benefit from increased security. Two panes are always better than one and with new double glazing you’ll have the latest locking mechanisms standard fit. Especially with uPVC windows, you can ask to have the multipoint locking system which adds much more security to your double glazing.

If you suffer from noise pollution then double glazing will help you in that area as well. Just as the unit will retain heat and keep it in your home, it’ll keep unwanted noises out. So if you live near a busy main road or near building works, your home will remain peaceful and quiet with double glazing.
