DIY Double Glazing ? Ordering Tips

Before ordering your double glazing units, you must have absolute confidence in 2 things; firstly the supplier you?ve chosen to place the order with and secondly, your survey.

Take your time choosing a supplier, if possible get a least 2 to 3 quotes and research the quality/brands of the products they are supplying. Don?t always go for the cheapest, remember cheap windows often have less functionality so check this when you order and make your opening specifications very clear. You want to take pride in the finished project so don?t let poor quality materials let you down.

  • Before deciding on a supplier, consider the following:
  • What kind of guarantee do they provide
  • Is home delivery and offloading included
  • What is the after sales service and are they genuinely helpful
  • Is there telephone, online or onsite support if you have any difficulties
  • Check with them precisely what is supplied. Are glazing packers, fixings and sealants included in the order
  • Is VAT included in the price

The survey is the cornerstone of any DIY double glazing project. If you are getting the professionals in they usually insist on doing their own survey at no added cost to you ? this shows how important it is to them to get it absolutely right. If planning on doing all your own installation, you may still want to consider getting a professional in to do the survey.? See Survey Tips for further information
If doing your own measuring up, pay attention to and consider every little detail because below is a list of requirements you will need to furnish your supplier with and on which they will be crafting your finished order:

??Highly detailed sketch of each window or door frame clearly identifying the style and exact measurements, plus any specific ventilation or security features you require.
??Indicate if you require any ?easy exit? hinges if the windows is to be an escape route in case of emergency.
??Write ?clear? to indicate clear glass or clearly write the trade name of any special glass you are ordering, for example patterned, coloured, bevelled or leaded.
??Remember to mark whether each window requires a cill, the front to back measurements for this and state whether this has been accounted for in you height measurements ? presumably it has.
??Include the technical specifications for each window such as mullion distance, transom drop and whether you want external or internal beading.
When paying for your order, ideally use a credit card, never ever pay by cash without getting a full receipt and your guarantee.
